Listed below are some resources for residents who are homeless and others who may be seeking shelter during the extreme cold.

River Valley Metro Mass Transit District (Bus) ~ All fixed route buses are FREE as warming stations any time the temperature or wind chill is below zero. This applies to fixed routes in the Urbanized Area and not the Commuter services to University Park or Midway Airport.

Kankakee Valley Park District (KVPD) ~  The following locations are open as warming centers:

Rec Center Classrooms: Wednesday through Friday from 12-4pm
     Civic Center: Wednesday from 8:30am-4:30pm
Bird Park Board Room: Wednesday through Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm
Ice Valley Downstairs Party Room: Wednesday-Saturday from 10am-5pm

Kankakee Public Library ~ is NOT a warming center; however, people are welcome to visit the library during regular hours of operation:

     Monday - Thursday:  9am - 9pm /  Friday:  9am - 6pm  / Saturday:  9am - 5pm / Sunday:  CLOSED

NOTE:  I want to thank the community for the outpouring concern about others during this time of need. In addition, I want to thank our community partners for their assistance in providing resources.  Please be sure to check on your elderly family members and neighbors.  Also, please be sure children are appropriately dressed for the weather.  It is important to cover as much skin as possible and make sure children have hats and gloves.  It does not take long for frostbite to occur when skin is exposed during such cold temperatures.
